An upright and tufted long-lived grass usually growing 50-75 cm tall. Its long and narrow leaf blades (up to 40 cm long and 2.5-3.5 mm wide) may be flat or somewhat rolled. Its seed-heads are relatively thin and elongated in appearance (8-25 cm long and 5-30 mm wide)they are spike-like with numerous slightly spreading, relatively long, branches (5-10 cm long). Each of these branches bears numerous tiny flower spikelets (1.5-2 mm long).
